West Butterwick

‘The butter farm on the West side of the river’ is a rural community situated four miles North East of Epworth and approximately five miles due North of Owston Ferry.

Although the village has less than one thousand inhabitants, it has some excellent amenities including the very fine Church of St. Mary, built in 1841 from white brick in the Gothic style, consisting of nave and a western tower with an octagonal stair turret, pinnacles and a brick spire that contains a single bell. The recently restored stained glass windows are of particular interest.

The village also has a well supported Wesleyan Chapel, built in 1836, an excellent Primary School, extensive playing fields with a children’s play area and football pitches, a village hall and two public houses.

Although the post office was recently closed, as part of the national cut-backs, the local shop is still an intrinsic part of village life, as is the community owned, purpose built Doctor’s surgery and medical centre.

Regularly featuring in the County-wide Best Kept Village competition, West Butterwick is home to some of The Isle of Axholme’s longest established families, as well as many ‘incomers’ who have found that ‘special something’ within the parish.

Today’s newcomers are upholding a long and distinguished tradition who’s lineage dates back to The Romans and subsequently The Saxons, Danes and Normans who were all intent upon making their homes and livelihoods in Butrewic, as it was formerly known.
